When I finished Sleepwalking Land, though, I flipped back to page 1 and started over immediately. An unforgettable set of characters sleepwalks the same earth, some having given up hope, others trying to mend what seems well beyond mending.
Such an enjoyable read. Don’t seek your relatives any more, those who have left for other lands in search of peace. The poetic and livfo extremely simple way with which Mia Couto tells this story – that feels more like a tale – lights up the grave subject.
This book might just not be my style.

In alternating chapters we are treated to these parallel journeys, and as the story progresses, as it gets stranger and stranger, these two narratives begin to intertwine.

An old man and a young boy, Tuahir and Muidinga, travel a “dead” road trying to get away from the war. Part of this is due to the quasi – magical-realism elements that Couto plays with. May have to force the book club to read this one, so I can re-read it. Grow and Glow in Life you wanna grow? One story is that the boy has no memory of his early life because he was taken to a witchdoctor to empty his head of the horrible memories.
You can expect to get impressions of how a long civil war this one in Mozambique, but it may as well apply to any other war twists peoples lives, dreams, desires and aspirations. As for me, I only happened to find it all a bit repetitive, and was honestly praying the book would come to an end so I could move on to a more compelling read.
When I finished Sleepwalking Land, though, I flipped back to page 1 and started over immediately.
