Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Lately, reading has been like playing Hazard with books and I’ve been losing. But, finally, I latched onto this very good, very absorbing story by MJP. Very smooth, fluid writing, excellent character development, depth.
Social mores were quite different then and those we consider youngsters today would have been putnfy to be of marriageble age during the late ‘s. Thus, while I ached for the poor little heroine during the prologue, I understood the hero’s reaction to the circumstance even though he had doomed himself by being falling-down drunk. Had he been sober, he would have been in another room and there would have been no story. It was difficult for me to suspend my disbelief enough to accept a life choice the heroine made some time into the story, but I made it.
Dearly Beloved (Signet Regency Romance): Mary Jo Putney: : Books
I didn’t buy it But the novel was so interesting that I decided to go along to get along I wasn’t about to stop reading: The io was so over-the-top, I expected him to bepoved from the pages of a penny dreadful at any minute, especially during a scene near the end. The author wrote this novel beautifully. I was on the edge of my seat a great deal of the time during my time reading this book! Putney is such an amazing storyteller that builds so many intriguing layers that keep the reader so engrossed!
Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase. Belover thought I had read every one of her books, but this one popped up on Amazon and I grabbed it. Putney is able to discuss topics that in other hands would be prurient or clumsy. In this, shotgun bride, left behind with a baby, decides to go after husband, in a most unique way: In less deft hands this could be a lesser Shakespearean comedy knock-off, but Putney pulls dearl all together with believable characters, sparkling dialogue, and a look inside the minds and hearts of her lovers.
This goes on my permanent MJ Putney shelf! I was so involved in this story I resented having to leave it to go to work! I woke up at 5: I have never seen the reason for re-telling the story in a review I just want everyone to read the story for themselves and get the same enjoyment out of it as I did.
Mary Jo Putney continues to be one of my favorite authors.
One person found this helpful. This was my first Mary Jo Putney book. Based on the quality of her writing, I will definitely try another. However, I did not really enjoy this particular book. Other reviews have stated that this is a book you either love or hate, but in ddearly end I just felt weary.
The book begins with the hero doing something that almost all readers will find offensive. This particular scene, while dark, did not ruin the book for me. Yes, Gervase’s actions were harsh, but there were extenuating circumstances and I did not feel he was irredeemable from that point on. The real trouble for me in the book was with Diana. She begins as a victim, but when we meet her again several years later she has rebuilt a life for herself that to me seemed quite lovely.
Then she decides deearly change everything and become a courtesan. From that point on, I just could not relate to her or understand her. Her decision to become a courtesan seemed totally out of character and completely contrived. From there she continues to make decisions that I just cannot wrap my brain around. Gervase, meanwhile, doubts her at every turn.

Yes, he has mommy issues. Yes, he feels unworthy of love. But his level of doubt and suspicion over everything seems extreme and left me feeling very worn out. Throw in a psychotic Frenchman who becomes obsessed with the heroine after seeing her one time at the opera and I find myself checking the kindle percentages every five minutes and wondering “are we there yet?. Not the usual fairy tale associated with the time period.
Both the character of the hero and the heroine are well developed and both are tortured by their less than perfect childhoods. While this leads to the misunderstandings of the plot, they are both survivors who have found a way to be contributing members of society each in their own way. Wow, what a wonderful, fast paced, page turner. Here you have marriage by accident, spying, mistrust, secrets and so many adventures. Lord Gervase and Diana, a hidden heir! See all 63 reviews.
