This work really must be read over an extended period of time– I found it quite difficult to read for long sittings– and the reader should expect to skip over sections. The heart and soul of the book is to be found in Schoenberg’s vivid and penetrating digressions–they are the fascinating reflections of a great and humane musician.

What makes this manuxle one of my top 3 books of all time is the philosophical discussions of everything, dissonance, consonance, progressions. His often polemical views of music history and aesthetics were crucial to many of the 20th century’s significant musicologists and critics, including Theodor Adorno, Charles Rosen, and Carl Dahlhaus.
